Use your CV as a marketing piece to showcase your experience and training. Present the facts about yourself in a way that will capture the interest of prospective employers. Make your CV as effective as possible.

  • Headings, subheadings, and bullets visually organize the CV, making it more professional, understandable, and memorable.
  • Make your CV as easy on the eyes as possible. Use a 10- to 12-point font.
  • Use a type style that is easy to read, e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, Tahoma, or Gill Sans.
  • Always use paper that looks good when photocopied (white or light colored).
  • Include your name and page number on each page. It is not uncommon for pages to become separated.
  • Be consistent with the format. If you bold major headings and abbreviate months of the year, do so consistently throughout the CV.
  • Prepare a draft version and review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Check spelling, grammar, and dates.
  • Have friends or colleagues proofread it for you.

Hiring organizations notice misspellings, grammatical errors, poor organization, and poor layout. It sends a negative message about you and reflects poorly on your clinical competence. Make sure your CV is complete, accurate, and kept up-to-date.

Printing and Sending Your CV

  • Print your CV on high-quality, plain white paper using the best quality printer you can access. Although patterned or colored paper may be unique for the original copy you send, they may not photocopy well.
  • If you are faxing your CV, request an acknowledgement of its receipt.
  • Send your CV on the day you say you will.
  • If e-mailing your CV, attach it as a document and follow-up with a faxed or mailed copy in case the format is lost in the e-mail transmission.
  • Always call to confirm that you have the correct fax number before sending.
