SSM Palliative Care Physician Leaderhip Opportunity

SSM Health is actively seeking an experienced physician leader that is clinically outstanding, possesses  a high level of empathy and caring, and has a passion for educating providers and staff on Palliative Medicine.  This divisional site chief will spend 0.5 FTE in clinic seeing patients and 0.5 FTE on administrative tasks associated with building out our newly formed Palliative Medicine Department which combines a robust inpatient program and an expanding ambulatory program in our outpatient clinic settings. Expanding the Palliative Care referral network from oncology to other key areas of our multi-specialty clinic such as neurology, pulmonary, and cardiology in order to enhance delivery across the entire continuum of care. Elevating Palliative Care awareness and clinical competencies across our region will be critical in this role placing a high degree of success contingent upon relationship building capabilities with our primary and specialty care providers in outpatient, inpatient, skilled nursing, and home settings ensuring continuity of care. Development of EBM best practice Palliative Medicine standards such as pathway protocols for transition of care and quality of palliative care across geographic care settings.

Clinical Palliative Medicine Specifics:

  • 0.5 FTE

  • 17.5 patient contact hours each week

  • Outpatient practice

  • Serve as expert resource for Palliative Medicine MD’s and Aps

  • No call schedule

Administrative Palliative Medicine Specifics:

  • 0.5 FTE

  • Approximately 20 hours per week

  • Provider and front line staff education

  • Create educational program

  • Network with primary and specialty providers across the region

  • Provide direct leadership to AP’s on staff

  • Represent SSM WI Region in organization-wide Palliative Medicine Initiatives

  • Standardization amongst 3 WI hospitals and 22 regional clinics


  • M.D. or D.O.

  • Completion of AOA or ACGME specialty of subspecialty residency program

  • BE/Board Certified in Palliative Medicine

  • Completion of Palliative Medicine Fellowship

  • Active WI Medical License

  • Active DEA Certificate

  • Experience with both inpatient and outpatient Palliative Medicine

  • Demonstrated success in developing and overseeing a Palliative Medicine division/department

St. Mary’s Hospital has been serving South Central Wisconsin since 1912. The hospital is a tertiary care facility with 440 beds, staffed by SSM/Dean physicians. The relationship between the hospital and Dean Clinic spans decades, leading to excellent and uninterrupted care during and after hospitalization.
